Publicolor hosted their annual benefit, Stir, Splatter + Roll at Martin Luther King Jr. High School (122 Amsterdam Avenue, NYC). The evening began with painting, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Guests covered their colorful and festive attire with jumpsuits provided by Tyvek as they designed tote bags alongside notable artists and designer. Guests were later able to purchase their totes at the suggested price of $50-$100. Artist Rashid Johnson’s table raised $2,300 and one tote bag sold for $400. |
During the reception, guests were able to bid on custom one-of-a-kind tote bags, designed for the benefit’s silent auction by some of the worlds’ best architects, artists, and designers. Carlos Falchi’s custom tote won the highest bid of $550. Dinner and program immediately followed at 7:30. Simon Doonan emceed the evening. Publicolor honored Michael Kaiser, President of the Kennedy Center. Actress Bernadette Peters presented him with his award. Publicolor also honored Benjamin Moore, Michael Searles accept on the company’s behalf, and Gary DeBode of Edison Properties. Simon Doonan presented both with their awards. |
The evening raised just under $1 million dollars. All proceeds go towards Publicolor’s mission to engage students in their education, while teaching them strong and transferable work habits so they are prepared to be productive in both college and career. The evening’s Co-Chairs were: Jeffrey Banks, Eugene Kohn, Michael Kors, Paul Polizzotto and Ruth Lande Shuman. Last Thursday, May 1st, Operation Smile hosted a New York Smile event at Cipriani Wall Street. Operation Smile is the world's largest medical charity of its kind providing free cleft surgery and care. Michael Strahan, co-host of Live with Kelly and Michael, kicked off the evening welcoming the more than 500 supporters to the 12th Annual New York Smile Event. NBC News’ Natalie Morales served as Master of Ceremonies. Singer and Tony-winning actress, Jennifer Holliday, performed. The evening raised $1 million for the organization. |
The evening honored Lisa and Mat Lori, along with Kathy Van Zeeland and her husband, Bruce Makowsky, with the Founders Circle Award. The Loris, Mrs. Van Zeeland and Mr. Makowsky have helped Operation Smile share the joy of a simple smile through their many fundraisers and initiatives. Most notably, they launched an extraordinary project called, The Three Little Bears, named after the Lori’s three sons, Zachary, Luke and Griffin, who were all born with facial paralysis. The Three Little Bears initiative was developed, designed and co-created by childhood friends, Lisa Lori, a writer, and Kathy Van Zeeland, a handbag designer. The two families have raised nearly $1 million for the organization. |
The evening also honored actor Sharif Atkins with the Universal Smile Award for his work as an official Smile Ambassador. Since 2011, Mr. Atkins has been a Smile Ambassador strongly supporting the organization's global efforts. He has raised countless dollars to heal smiles through Crowdrise as well as National Smile Month in 2012, which helped provide life-changing surgery for 50 children. He also volunteered on a mission in Ecuador in 2013. Adding to the joy of the evening, Sharif proposed to his girlfriend, Bethany Hotchkiss, on stage to a roar of applause, as the event came to a close. Microsoft Corporation received the Corporate Humanitarian Award. Microsoft’s continued generosity has launched Operation Smile to become a truly 21st century organization. Leveraging resources and partnerships, Microsoft has facilitated donations of more than $1 million in technology, in addition to invaluable time and commitment from its team to Operation Smile’s mission. Michael D. Robinson accepted the award. |
Last Friday evening Jean Shafiroff and Patrick McMullan hosted the first-ever Pit Bulls as Pets cocktail party at the Shafiroff apartment, a kick-off for The Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation’s 5th Annual Unconditional Love Dinner Dance Gala that will take place in Southampton on July 19th. The event will honor Georgina Bloomberg for her work on behalf of animals. Jean and Martin Shafiroff are owners of a beautiful adopted Pit Bull Bella, who was sporting a faux-diamond encrusted collar and happily greeting guests Hunt Slonem, Geoffrey Bradfield, Elizabeth Shafiroff, Liliana and William Cavendish, Roy Kean, Ann Rapp, Randi Schatz, Michael Gross, Elsa McCabb Thompson, Margo Langenberg, Morgan O’Connor, Consuelo Costin, Michelle Gerber Klein, former Miss America Suzette Charles, Larry Wohl and Leesa Rowland, Herb Karlitz, Billy Leroy, Lucia Hwong Gordon, Dr. Thomas Behm, Nicole Noonan, Cassandra Seidenfeld, Southampton Animal Shelter's Pat Grey, and band leader Alex Donner, who will be performing at the gala with his Orchestra. Charlie, the Shafiroffs’ rescued Chihuahua was not nearly as social and preferred to lounge on the couch in the library as supporters, including Patricia and Tom Shiah, Maggie Norris, and Monica Seles. |
Proceeds raised at the upcoming Unconditional Love Dinner Dance Gala will be directed not only to daily care of the shelter animals, but also for special projects undertaken over the past year, including rescue efforts for those dogs that have been enslaved in puppy mills and the programs that the shelter has developed for special needs children. The 25th annual GLAAD Media Awards were held last Saturday at the Waldorf. They recognized several out athletes on stage including Derrick Gordon, Darren Young, Blake Skjellerup and Jessica Aguilar. |
Last Monday evening in the Grand Ballroom of the Pierre Hotel, The Friars Club held a "Grand Evening of Love and Laughter" to thank retiring Dean Freddie Roman and Prior Stewie Stone for their lifelong devotion to the Club. Top names in the entertainment world gathered to pay tribute, and to thank them for the many years of laughs. |
