Last Thursday night, New York’s young philanthropists gathered at The American Museum of Natural History for its 2014 Museum Dance, “Star Studded!”

As New York City’s longest-running junior benefit, the Museum Dance brings together influential young philanthropists to celebrate and raise essential funds for the Museum’s scientific and educational programs, which enable thousands of underserved New York City school children to visit the Museum annually. The theme of the evening was “Star Studded!,” in honor of the Museum’s new Space Show, Dark Universe, narrated by the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium Neil deGrasse Tyson.

The event began with an intimate dinner followed by an after-party for all with Music by JUS SKE. All funds raised from the event benefit the Museum's scientific and educational programming. Men wore black tie; women dressed to sparkle and shine.

On Monday, May 5th, Fountain House raised a record-breaking 1.2 million dollars at its 11th Annual Fountain House Symposium and Luncheon. The event, titled The Challenges of Dual-Diagnosis: Substance Abuse and Mental Illness, took place in the Grand Ballroom of The Pierre, where nearly 600 guests convened to honor Mitchell S. Rosenthal, MD, founder of Phoenix House, for his lifelong contributions to the field of recovery.

This year’s Symposium topic is timely and relevant, as recent studies suggest that nearly one-third of people with all mental illnesses and approximately one-half of people with serious mental illnesses (such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder) abuse substances. Moreover, it is estimated that more than one-third of all alcohol abusers and more than one-half of all drug abusers are battling mental illness.
Dr. Mitchell Rosenthal and Kenneth Dudek
Among this event’s dedicated supporters are many who, in addition to rallying each year at The Pierre to boost Fountain House, are eager to learn the latest from the frontlines of mental health research, treatment and public policy. The Symposium panel discussion, geared to a lay audience, featured a trio of distinguished panelists: Marc Galanter, MD, Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Division of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, NYU School of Medicine; William Cope Moyers, Vice President of Public Affairs and Community Relations at Hazelden and New York Times best-selling author of Broken and Now What? and Ashli J. Sheidow, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Medical University of South Carolina. Consuelo Mack, founder, anchor and executive producer of Consuelo Mack WealthTrack, served as master of ceremonies.

In accepting the Fountain House Humanitarian Award, Dr. Rosenthal spoke movingly of the bond between Fountain House and Phoenix House, the organization he founded.
