Tuesday night's Lighthouse Guild's Annual POSH® AFFAIR Gala bestowed POSH® Visionary Awards upon Sheila Nevins, President, HBO Documentary Films; Jonathan Adler, Potter, Designer and Author; and Thom Browne, Designer. The awards, celebrating Excellence in the fields of Film, Design and Lifestyle, crown savvy fashionistas' favorite shopping event: Lighthouse Guild's POSH® Fashion Sale.

For more than 40 years, leaders of the fashion world have come together for the annual POSH® Fashion Sale. The proceeds from the sale of top designers' clothing and accessories benefit Lighthouse International, an affiliate of Lighthouse Guild, which offers the broadest array and comprehensive scope of services currently available for people who are blind, vision impaired or multi-disabled.

Fashionable philanthropy has been an important part of Lighthouse Guild ever since heiresses Winifred and Edith Holt used their dress allowances to start Lighthouse International in 1905. In 2014, this legacy of fashionable philanthropy® continues in several forms: donors contribute gently-used designer items to the POSH® Sale; and purchase POSH® Affair dinner tickets and fashion items at the POSH® Sale.

The Children’s Museum of Manhattan held its 2014 Biennial Spring Gala on Thursday, May 15th at The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers in New York City. The event had over 350 guests and $925,000 was raised.

Executive Director Andrew Ackerman presented the Corporate Leadership Award to Samsung Electronics America. The award, which was created in 2012 to recognize companies that are committed to the development of both children and communities, honors Samsung’s efforts to encourage youth to use STEM skills to creatively tackle an issue in their back yard through the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow program – a nationwide education competition for public schools in the United States.

All funds raised benefit The Children’s Museum of Manhattan (CMOM), the vibrant home to 350,000 visitors a year from all segments of the NYC community and tourists from around the world. The museum’s educational mission in early childhood education, creativity, health and culture thrives within their home on 83rd Street and at 50 outreach sites in low-income communities across the city as well as through national initiatives with leading authorities and government agencies. Child development is at the core of CMOM’s values and mission and their vision is to be the bridge that connects children and adults in the community, school and home in order to prepare our children for the global world in which they live. Supporters of Inner-City Scholarship Fund raised $1 million at the 38th Annual Friends Committee Gala on Tuesday, May 13th. Over 400 guests attended the event at Cipriani 42nd Street in Manhattan to benefit Inner-City in its dedication to providing tuition assistance for low-income students attending inner-city Catholic schools within the Archdiocese of New York.

“A quality education is the most powerful tool a child can have,” said Susan George, Executive Director of Inner-City. “Seeing this room so full of people committed to providing educational opportunities to our students, is something I – and the thousands of students Inner-City supports – are very thankful for.”

Former scholarship recipient Richard Recchia, who graduated from high school in 2004 and is now an Emmy Award winning producer at CBS Sports, gave a moving speech about how a Catholic education and the support he received from Inner-City helped shape his future. “I spent my childhood living in a public housing project complex in Manhattan, with my mother and three siblings, in a cramped one-bedroom apartment – finances were tight,” said Recchia. “Without Inner-City Scholarship Fund and the support of my sponsor, I would not be standing here tonight and more importantly, I don’t know if I would have developed the desire to dream and aspire for what I have been blessed with today.”

In addition to dinner and dancing, guests enjoyed a performance by Maria Jose Nolasco, an 8th grade student at Immaculate Conception Elementary School in the Bronx, who sang Vivir mi Vida by Marc Anthonyand Colors of the Wind by Stephen Schwartz.

Inner-City Scholarship Fund was founded in 1971 by the late Terence Cardinal Cooke and a group of prominent executives of many religious beliefs. Inner-City provides tuition assistance to over 7,500 students (92% minority and 33% non-Catholic) in 79 inner-city Catholic schools in Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island. An astonishing 98% percent of seniors attending inner-city Catholic high schools graduate, and 96% pursue college at some of the finest universities in the nation.

On Wednesday, May 7th at Cipriani 42nd Street, they held the 13th Annual Women Who Care Luncheon benefitting United Cerebral Palsy of New York City (UCP of NYC). The sold-out event celebrated the extraordinary accomplishments of women as professionals, caregivers and philanthropists and raised nearly $550,000 to fund programs and services offered by UCP of NYC to over 14,000 children and adults with disabilities throughout New York City.

On Thursday, May 15th at Pier 60 Let’s Get Ready’s 8th Annual Gala honored Nicholas E. Billotti, Chairman, Turner International and raised over $1,000,000. The evening included dinner and a live auction. The monies raised from the evening supports free SAT preparation, admissions counseling and other support services needed to gain admission to and graduate from college for low-income high school students. Services are provided by volunteer college students who also serve as role models and mentors.
