| On Saturday, May 24th, ARF kicked off the Memorial Day weekend with the 4th Annual Designer Showhouse at the ARF Thrift Shop in Sagaponack, chaired by Gordon Hoppe, Gigi Mahon and Sandra McConnell. Vice-Chairs included Peter Hallock and Lisa McCarthy, with Fern Mallis as Honorary Chair. The shop was transformed into six rooms styled by some of New York’s most illustrious interior decorators. Each room incorporated ARF Thrift Shop items as well as pieces donated from the designers own collections. Rooms ranged from a peek into the “Captain’s Cabin” to an “All About Eve” room inspired by the birthday party Margo Channing (Bette Davis) threw for her boyfriend. Guests enjoyed wine donated by Channing Daughters Winery, vodka donated by Alpha Noble Vodka and hors d’oeuvres donated by the Dancing Gourmet as they mingled and shopped among the themed rooms. Designers included John Bjørnen, Suzanne Caldwell and Maria Greenlaw, Byron C. James, Zoe Hoare and Chris Mead, Scott Sanders and Rod Winterrowd. |

| The Women's Division of Albert Einstein College of Medicine hosted its 60th Annual Spirit of Achievement Luncheon in the Grand Ballroom of The Plaza Hotel on Tuesday, May 13, 2014. This year's honorees included Tony and Emmy award-winning actress Christine Baranski, Alexandra Wilkis Wilson, co-founder of Gilt, Julie Macklowe, founder of vbeauté, and distinguished Einstein faculty member Judy Aschner, M.D., a leading expert in pediatric medicine. The event was co-chaired by Alison Brettschneider, Jackie Harris Hochberg and Andrea Stark and Women's Division President Carol Roaman. |

| NBC Today Show contributor Jill Martin, a past Spirit honoree, served as the afternoon's Mistress of Ceremonies. The luncheon began with an introduction by Albert Einstein College of Medicine Board of Overseers Chair Ruth L. Gottesman, Ed. D. and a special video tribute in remembrance of former Women's Division president Rita Rosen, which was introduced by Carol Roaman. Guests including Olympic Gold Medalist Sarah Hughes, novelist Barbara Taylor Bradford, journalist Judith Miller, Douglas Elliman's Jane Pontarelli, The H.O.P.E Foundation's Nicole DiCocco, Lucia Hwong Gordon, Michele Herbert, Janna Bullock, Real Housewives of New York stars Ramona Singer and Aviva Drescher and Real Housewives of NJ star Dina Manzo took in the gorgeous ballroom blossoming with six-foot tall floral centerpieces provided by Pat Glenn Productions. The towering bouquets brought in by Andrea Stark were also auctioned for charity following the luncheon. |

| Since 1953, the Einstein Women's Division has raised millions of dollars to advance medical research and medical education programs at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. The Spirit of Achievement Awards Luncheon, held annually in New York City, is the Division's flagship fundraiser. Proceeds from the luncheon benefitted the Women's Division's initiative to support vital cancer research by leading scientists at Einstein's Albert Einstein Cancer Center. |

| For the eighth consecutive year, Coopers Beach in Southampton was filled with color, laughter and hope as supporters, survivors, and Long Island residents came together for Uniting Against Lung Cancer’s annual “Kites for a Cure®” on Saturday, May 24. From 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., crowds gathered to raise kites, spirits, and funds, and to welcome the summer season. Approximately 500 lung cancer supporters came out to share the day’s festive mood and fly kites, which resulted in almost $60,000 raised for innovative lung cancer research. |

| “‘Kites for a Cure’ always brings joy to Coopers Beach – it’s something for the whole family that not only welcomes summer, but ultimately brings people together in hope to rally against the nation’s number one cancer killer,” said Mark Epley, Mayor of the Village of Southampton. “We truly love hosting this event year after year, and it’s a privilege to assist the work of this incredible organization.” Funds raised from the event itself, along with an underwriting sponsorship from Rechler Equity Partners and The Hampton Business District at Gabreski, will go directly to Uniting Against Lung Cancer’s national lung cancer research grant program. For a donation of $30, guests received a high-quality kite which they were able to decorate on-site with pictures, names, or their own special message. Refreshments were provided by Tate’s Bakeshop, Hain Celestial, and Hint water throughout the afternoon. |

| Uniting Against Lung Cancer was founded in 2001 in memory of Joan Scarangello, a Southampton resident and non-smoker who lost her battle with lung cancer. The Foundation has awarded more than $11.5 million in research grants to find a cure for the disease that will claim an estimated 160,000 lives in the U.S. this year. Coico, President of The City College of New York, as she announced the launch of the City College Center for the Arts. The Center will serve as a cultural hub that builds a sense of community both within the school and its surrounding neighborhood, while inspiring creativity and diversity. It will also provide a premier venue for local and national performers and for art patrons in the tri-state area. |

| Aaron Davis Hall, the largest performing arts center in Manhattan north of Lincoln Center is now under the auspices of The City College Center for the Arts, and the focal point of this creative revitalization. It features two theaters that seat 630 and 267, respectively, and a studio complex. | The worlds of global high fashion, business and academia came together for One To World’s 24th Annual Fulbright Awards Dinner, on Tuesday, May 20, at the Waldorf Astoria. Co-Chairs Frank Brown, Wenke Thoman Sterns, Thomas Schutte, Yann Coatanlem, and Enzo Viscusi provided outstanding leadership. Honorary Chair Harriet Mayor Fulbright, widow of the late Senator J. William Fulbright, welcomed guests, saying, “Senator Fulbright’s hard work on the international exchange program that bears his name was undertaken not only to foster peace, but to lay the groundwork for a worldwide network of intelligent and dedicated leaders to deal with major global issues together. How wonderful it is to share this evening with a room filled with people who share these ideals.” |

| One To World brings Americans together with Fulbright Scholars and outstanding student leaders from over 100 countries who are studying at New York area colleges and universities. Deborah Clifford, One To World’s Executive Director, said, “This dinner is a great example of the One To World mission, bringing students and scholars from around the world together with Americans, face to face, to learn about each other, in the Fulbright tradition of furthering peace through mutual understanding.” Honoree Bob Moritz, U.S. Chairman and Senior Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, exemplifies the transformative effect of work or study abroad. As he stated, “If you’re overseas or in a country where no one speaks your language, you get a different perspective pretty quickly. I had lived in the New York area my entire life. Being in Japan opened up my personal experiences and interactions from then on – I had a much better appreciation for what it felt like to be in another person’s shoes.” |

| Áslaug Magnúsdóttir, who was also honored, was a Fulbright Scholar from Iceland and became the first Icelandic woman to earn an MBA from Harvard Business School. Just one week before the dinner, she launched a groundbreaking online fashion company, Tinker Tailor. A co-founder of Moda Operandi, she says, “A significant percentage of our customers were international. I spent time in Brazil, the Middle East, Russia, and Western Europe. I have such a passion for travel—getting to know and understand people from different cultures is one of my favorite things.” Fernando Napolitano was honored for his founding of the Italian Business & Investment Initiative (IBII), which is creating a network of Italian and U.S. leaders to encourage investment in Italian small-to-medium businesses and high-tech startup companies. IBII is also partnering with the Fulbright Commission in Italy, the American Embassy, and Invitalia to bring Italian PhD students in science in technology to learn from startups in Silicon Valley. |

| Honoree John Zogby, who founded the internationally renowned Zogby Poll and is Senior Analyst at Zogby Analytics, has worked on polling projects in 70 countries. His presidential polling remains among the most accurate through five elections. He is author of First Globals: Understanding, Managing, and Unleashing Our Millennial Generation, about the generation born between 1979 and 1991. “I have a passion for our First Global generation,” he says. “They really give me hope. They are ready to plunge in and make their world a better place.” A number of former One To World Honorees were present, including Susan Carmel Lehrman, Gianluigi Esposito, Frank Brown, David Heleniak, Fred Nazem, Sherry Mueller, Bob Schweich and Dr. David Steinberg. |

| 500 guests attended the event. Awards were presented by current Fulbright Scholars who spoke of their lives and the opportunities made possible by the Fulbright program and One To World. A “Text To Pledge” drive raised funding for One To World’s Global Classroom, which brings Fulbright Scholars into local public schools to share their countries and cultures. As Nicole Jalca, a fourth grade student from Brooklyn, said, “Because of Global Classroom, I know that I can make a difference. I am part of the world, and we are all connected.” |

| Recently at Chelsea Piers, North Star Fund held its annual Community Gala. This 35th Anniversary Community Gala was a spectacular celebration of North Star Fund and the achievements of our diverse community of philanthropic and grassroots activists and organizers. The event raised $870,000, which broke every previous record. It was an evening of inspiration, fun, food, dance and connecting with old friends as well as meeting new ones. North Star Fund honored the following individuals for their leadership in activism and social justice: Dr. Gail Furman, psychologist specializing in child and adolescent psychology, activist, and donor supporting progressive political candidates and issues at the local, state, and national level; Peggy Saika, President and Executive Director of Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy, and founding executive director of the Asian Pacific Environmental Network; and William Traylor, President of Richman Housing Resources LLC, and a leader in the development of affordable and supportive housing in New York City. |

| Brooklyn Food Coalition was honored for their dedication to a just and sustainable food system, promoting food justice, and blazing a trail to integrate environmental justice with food democracy. Communities United for Police Reform was honored for their campaign to end discriminatory policing practices in New York, bringing together a movement of community members, lawyers, researchers, and activists to strategize, share expertise, and take action. North Star Fund’s honorees’ commitments to making New York a more fair and just city came through with every word. Their grantee partners, donors, and colleagues mixed and mingled for social justice, and as Executive Director Hugh Hogan reminded everyone: “North Star is a place where we come together to celebrate and support a world of equality, opportunity and glorious diversity. Our community has accomplished so much over the last three and a half decades, and we need to stand up and boldly say that every New Yorker has a stake in deciding how our city will operate if we want a real grassroots-led democracy.” |
