Celebrate Summer

The company of One Thrilling Combination performing "One" at The Public Theater's annual Gala.

Saturday afternoon at a private residence in Bridgehampton, the Parrish Art Museum held a cocktail reception to celebrate summer 2014 at the museum and to kick-off its annual Midsummer benefit gala, which will be held in the Herzog & de Meuron-designed building in Water Mill.

This year they will be honoring philanthropist Inga Maren Otto and author/documentary filmmaker Katharina Otto-Bernstein. Attendees will get the wonderful last chance to see artist Jennifer Bartlett's first major museum survey, and Maya Lin's ecologically inspired sculptures. It's always a fun party and it brings out the great collectors, artists, culture mavens and residents who support the museum for what it brings to the community.

Last Monday night, The Public Theater held its annual Gala, One Thrilling Combination, at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park.

The evening celebrated Marvin Hamlisch, The Public Theater, and the creation of A Chorus Line. For nearly 60 years, The Public has developed and produced groundbreaking new works while nurturing the careers of artists and providing access for audiences with thousands of free and low-cost tickets. Though Marvin Hamlisch passed away in 2012, the spirit of his original collaboration with The Public lives on. His contributions to A Chorus Line changed musical theater history and changed the trajectory of The Public Theater.

This past Thursday at American Museum of Natural History, The Junior Council concluded its 2013-2014 season with Inside Dark Universe—a special screening of the Museum’s Space Show Dark Universe, which is narrated by Neil deGrasse Tyson, the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium. The event featured remarks by Rosamond Kinzler, the executive producer of Dark Universe and senior director of science education at the Museum, and Vivian Trakinski, Dark Universe producer. Afterwards, there was a cocktail and jazz reception on the Museum’s Arthur Ross Terrace.

Dark Universe takes viewers through the recent dramatic advances in our knowledge of the universe and explores what’s to come in the future of cosmology. Through an extremely detailed, never-before-seen visualization based on new scientific data, the audience experiences how dark matter—an invisible form of matter—shapes galaxies and delves into the mysteries of dark energy, the force that is accelerating the expansion of the universe.

The American Museum of Natural History’s Junior Council is one of New York City’s most stimulating membership groups for young philanthropists. Founded in 1994, the Junior Council supports the Museum’s mission to discover, interpret, and disseminate—through scientific research and education—knowledge about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe. On Wednesday, June 11, over 150 guests attended The Hort's 4th biennial Block Party art auction fundraiser at the gallery and rooftop garden of the Arsenal in Central Park. Sponsored by Shady Records, the event featured BBQ-style food, music by Dub-L, who was spinning 70's funk & soul and mid-90's rap alongside Minya Oh (Hot 97's Miss Info), Block Party co-chairman and host.

The silent auction, which was curated by co-chairman Dana Albarella James, featured a broad variety of original works by an international collection of renowned artists, many of which honed their skills on the streets of NYC as pioneering graffiti artists. The highest bids went to original works by KAWS, Todd James, Shepard Fairey, Barry McGee, and legendary graffiti artist, Dondi White.

Robin Givens, television, film and stage actress and advocate, hosted the gala. Givens has served as spokesperson for the National Domestic Violence Hotline and was awarded the Vital Link Award by that organization for her over 20 years of work on behalf of women, children and families facing the challenges of domestic violence. She is also Co-Chair of Women Who Care.  YWCA USA also recognized three local YWCA associations for their outstanding commitment to advancing the YWCA's mission to eliminate racism and empower women. This year's Association Excellence Award winners were the YWCA Great Lakes Bay Region for their work in the area of women's empowerment, YWCA Tulsa for racial justice, and YWCA Orange County (New York) for their work in advocacy.
