On Saturday, January 25th, 2013, more than 250 guests gathered at the Pierre Hotel in New York City for the 54th Annual Quadrille Ball, one of the few white tie events and an annual staple of the New York Ball Season. This year’s honoree, Mr. Bernard Meyer, Managing Partner of Meyer Werft, has earned an international reputation for the construction of large, modern cruise ships including Celebrity Cruises and Disney Cruise Lines. His newest and largest ship, the Norwegian Getaway, just came to port in time to host more than 4000 visitors for the Super Bowl. Ball guests included the German Consul General, New York, Busso von Alvensleben and his wife Maria-Theresia, the Rector of Technical University of Dortmund and head of the Board of Trustees of Krupp Foundation Prof. Dr. Ursula Gather, UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Mrs. Angela Kane, the CEO of the German American Chamber of Commerce Dietmar Rieg, Count Victor Dijon von Monteton with his wife Katharina, the President of the Germanistic Society of America, Prof. Dr. Barbara Elling, and Quadrille Ball Committee Chair Irmintraud Jost. They all enjoyed silent auction, cocktails, dinner and dancing until 4AM. |
The highlight of the evening was the traditional performance of the Quadrille, a 17th century court dance, performed by twenty pairs of young professionals. The Alex Donner Orchestra provided the musical backdrop for the evening. Mr. von Alvensleben also celebrated his Birthday that night along with Quadrille Benefactor David W. Detjen. The evening was made possible thanks to the generosity of sponsors including Vitra, Dr. Timothy Dezastro, Dr. and Mrs. Andrew Shiva, the Max Kade Foundation, the Paramount Group, and Henry Schein Cares. Mont Blanc, Tiffany & Co., Mercedes-Benz, Chopard, and other donors generously provided items for the Silent Auction. |
The Quadrille Ball, hosted by the Germanistic Society of America, promotes friendship and understanding among young people from around the world through international cultural exchange. Proceeds from the Quadrille Ball provide the Germanistic Society of America with funds for international scholarships to highly qualified American and German students. To date, more than 500 scholarships have been awarded totaling over $3 million. The Germanistic Society of America awards continue to support fields of study that transcend borders and cultures in our interconnected global society. |
On Wednesday, January 22, 2014, The Perlman Music Program (PMP) held its Fifth Charity Wine Auction at per se, with the largest turnout in its five year history. The guest of honor at this year's event was Madame Corinne Mentzelopoulos of Chateau Margaux, and co-chaired by Vanessa and Henry Cornell, Ellen and Rodger DeRose, Edith and Robert F. Hudson, Jr., Katherine and Peter Kend, Leora and Steven Levy, Toby and Itzhak Perlman, Joanna S. and Daniel Rose, Jeri and George P. Sape, Esq., Hannele and Michael Troise, Diane and Thomas Tuft, and Eileen and Ronald Weiser. Proceeds from this signature event benefitted the mission of PMP, founded 20 years ago by Toby Perlman, which offers unparalleled musical training to young string players of rare and special talent. |
Guests were greeted with champagne and canapés and then enjoyed a festive dinner, which consisted of a six-course seasonal tasting menu paired with exceptional wines, including bottles from Chateau Margaux, Chateau Lynch-Bages and Chateau d'Yqeum, in the intimate private dining room at per se. Michael Troise, retired Auction Director for Christie's Fine and Rare Wines Department and current Wine Advisor for the Kravis Center in Palm Beach, auctioned rare and extraordinary vintages from Bordeaux, Burgundy and Napa Valley, and one-of-a-kind dining, travel and cultural experiences – including a signed, original work by artist Robert Weingarten. |
PMP alumni performed virtuosic violin duos by Leclair and Weiniawski, and inspired many guests in the room to make outright gifts to support student scholarships at PMP. Auction items were generously donated by individuals and companies from around the world, with special thanks to Madame Corinne Mentzelopoulos and Chateau Margaux, Acker Merrall & Condit, AOC Investment Advisors, Domaine Wine Storage, Duclot La Vinicole, and Pointy Snout Caviar. |
