Some last minute advice from mom at the 38th Annual Hampton Classic.
The (38th) Annual Hampton Classic always signifies the end to the summer in the Hamptons. Held in high regard by the horse community, famous for its celebrity sightings, and second to none in high end shopping boutiques, it earns its nickname The Classic. It is one of the most prestigious horse shows in the nation, and features competitors at every level from young children in "Leadline" to Olympic veterans in the feature Event of the Classic, the $250,000 FTI Grand Prix

This year, the Classic features six show rings, a "Boutique Garden" with more than 70 high-end vendors, and an array of dining options.

Governor Andrew Cuomo stopped in to show his support for the "Taste NY" vendor stand and tasted some home-grown New York peaches.
The world's best horses and riders, including Olympic medalists and other Grand Prix stars, head the list of entries in the 38th annual Hampton Classic Horse Show which opened on Sunday afternoon. Many of the world's best riders participate in the Hampton Classic."

According to Shanette Barth Cohen, the horse show's Executive Director, "These stars of our sport will be competing every day and they will be looking to qualify for our main event, which takes place on Grand Prix Sunday!"

The Hampton Classic runs from August 25 - September 1.

This past Saturday they held the 18th annualArthur Ashe Kids’ Day at the US Open. It was the unofficial kickoff of the 2013 US Open tennis tournament and they were visited by guest speaker, the First Lady Michelle Obama, who was there to promote her “Let’s Move” campaign.

Mrs. Obama told the guests that she urged her own daughters to get active in tennis so they wouldn’t have the struggle at the game that she has had as an adult. She congratulated the US Tennis Association’s initiative to install five thousand new kid-sized tennis courts across the country and to train 15,000 new coaches, trainers and teachers over a three year period beginning next year.

Mrs. Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign was created to get kids more active and eating healthy meals.

On Thursday, August 22, the elegant Parisian pop-up picnic, Dîner en Blanc, Philadelphia took place for a second year. John F. Kennedy Boulevard, approaching 30th Street Station, was this year's 'secret' space. Culinary and culture enthusiasts dressed in white converged upon a secret locale for an unforgettable evening of elegance, beauty and magic. Attendees came prepared with tables, chairs, non-disposable supplies, food, wine and floral arrangements. Evening festivities included napkin waving, sparkler lighting, live music, dinner, and dancing. More than 2,000 people participated in this year's feast.
The "dinner in white," which began humbly in 1988, is now attended by thousands at some of the best-known Parisian spaces. That year, François Pasquier returned to Paris after a few years abroad and held a dinner party to reconnect with friends. So many wanted to come that he asked them to convene at the Bois de Boulogne and to dress in white, so they could find each other!

Swanning With Adrian

Did I say things we were winding down? I must have been deluded. Last weekend in the Hamptons was the perfect storm of politics, money, power, entertainment, and a little sentimentality thrown in to remind us we are actually human.

As you may have heard, Hill and Bill are churning up the potato patches in Sagaponack. They took this opportunity to raise a few rubles for his Bill, Hilary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation, which may or may not be part of The Clinton Global Initiative. I’ve lost track of his gazillions.
Bill and Hillary 's home in Sagaponack for the summer (owned by Republican donor Michael Saperstein).
Ron Perelman (the busiest boy — more to come), and Mort Zuckerman, among others, threw a do at Topping Rose, the restaurant that was already white hot and impossible to get in to. Thanks, Bill. The big Dems were all there: Alan and Susan Patricof, Marc Lasry, Robert Zimmerman, Joel Klein, Ann Tenenbaum, Michael Kempner, Donna Karan, Barbara Lee-Diamonstein-Spielvogel and Liz Robbins and Doug Johnson who feted the Clintons the night before. Infinite feting here. Not a word mentioned about Hillary’s possible run. All in good time.
Clockwise from top left: Ron Perelman; Alan and Susan Patricof; Joel Klein; Mort Zuckerman; Barbara Lee-Diamonstein-Spielvogel; Ann Tenenbaum.
Governor Andrew Cuomo, cleverly tacked on a fundraiser while the funds were flowing, and had his own shindig Sunday night with Jon Bon Jovi entertaining. I wondered if Sandra Lee made the lasagna, with ketchup. Not if Matilda was in the house.

Earlier that Friday, Eric Schmidt was given a book party in Southampton, sans Google glasses, so nary a report. Birthdays were also celebrated. Ben Bradlee’s 92nd was toasted by Barbara Walters, Carl Bernstein, Charlie Rose and a few other real journos, and real friends. Gigi and Avie Mortimer celebrated their anniversary, too. Kathy and Rick Hilton had their annual dinner. They are rumored to be the consummate hosts, and I heard the Glorious Food menu was the best of the summer.
Barbara Walters and the birthday boy Ben Bradlee with friends Mort Janklow, Linda Janklow, Candice Bergen, and Marshall Rose.
I have no complaints, though, as I suspect I went to the party of the summer. Ron Perelman opened the gates (literally, though only if they had your name), for the 3rd summer to benefit The Apollo Theater. Someone is doing something right in that development office. Paul Tudor Jones has just joined the board, and the cumulative force was palpable. Marcus Samuelson cooked, Questlove spinned. Roots was the ‘house band’, and that’s just for starters. Jamie Fox and Pharrell Williams were joined by Colin Powell on stage for the chorus of  “Get Lucky.” This was after they sang "Blurred Lines” — the song of the summer and the biggest generation uniter, moving moguls like Henry Kravis, Ron Lauder, Dick Parsons (the most easily moved, despite his size).

Katie Holmes
seemed to lose her last vestiges of imprisonment and jived her way onstage, joined by Ellen DeGeneres. Mary Kate Olsen snuggled on Oliver Sarkozy’s lap. Ciara sang, followed by the energetic Bon Jovi and Darlene Love. Lenny Kravitz belted “American Woman,” and the American women swooned.  Billy Joel and Mary J. Blige didn’t sing, but didn’t have to. Angelica Houston mingled with Harvey Weinstein and Don Johnson. They raised over $3 million, and in my book, they earned every penny.

The ubiquitous, legendary photographer of the New York social scene of the last 40 years, Patrick McMullan, celebrated his birthday Tuesday night at the Magnises Penthouse and Roof Garden on 132 Wooster Street. It was by invitation only (the only way to corral the crowds of Patrick's friends) and DJ Huda delivered the music and the birthday boy, who's just a few years beyond forty. The Party, which began at nine, could have run forever, but Patrick's nightlife with the lens will anyway.

Last Friday night at Ann Madonia Antiques on 36 Jobs Lane in Southampton, they held a cocktail reception and booksigning for authors Gary Lawrance and Anne Surchin and their newly revised edition of Houses of the Hamptons, 1880 – 1930 (Acanthus Press).

Click to orderHouses of the Hamptons.
Each of the thirty-four properties included are illustrated with extensive current as well as archival photographs, along with their histories and their architectural layouts.

This is a beautiful book with 334 pages, illustrated with both black and white and color photographs of some of the greatest houses of the Hamptons built in the half century ending in 1930.

Many of the great houses are gone, demolished by people who only wanted the land for some other projects (like breaking up the acreage and selling off the lots) or architectural choices, such as more contemporary styles.

However, many remain including “Westerly” which is now the summer home of Tory Burch, and “Ballyshear” which was purchased by Mayor Bloomberg last year for $20 million, “Old Trees” on Lake Agawam in Southampton which now belongs to hedge fund owner John Paulson. One of the greatest houses, built in 1929 by Henry Francis DuPont on the beach on Meadow Lane, is no longer extant. Sold after Mr. DuPont's death, the house went through several changes including a ludicrous architectural venture by one erstwhile tycoon-of-the-moment, Barry Trupin in the 1970s to a final sale (for $21 million) to Calvin Klein who had the entire house demolished, after which he built a modern two-story glass and steel house which was featured in last weekend’s New York Times.

Chiu-Ti Jansen at the China Beauty Charity Fund's inaugural China Fashion Night Gala at the Pierre Hotel.
This past Friday night, the China Beauty Charity Fund ("CBCF") celebrated its inaugural China Fashion Night Gala at the Pierre Hotel. Hosted by CBCF Founder and Chairwoman, Yue-Sai Kan, with actor Archie Kao and Miss Universe Olivia Culpo as Master and Mistress of Ceremonies, the gala benefitted the CBCF Scholarship at the Fashion Institute of Technology ("FIT").

The highlight of the gala was the fashion presentation and runway show by China's preeminent haute couture designer, Guo Pei, whose exquisite creations were showcased for the very first time in the US. Guo presented acclaimed pieces from her "Legend of the Dragon" collection, including a gown inspired by stained glass domes of European churches and a gown adorned with several thousand "Gong Hua," silk flowers made exclusively for the royal palace and were rescued from the storage room of a deserted factory and carefully restored with steam – which took nearly 50,000 hours.

City Parks Foundation's annual CityParks Tennis Benefit, co-chaired by Billie Jean King and John McEnroe, was held on Tuesday, August 27 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The event, which welcomed 250 guests, raised over $200,000 for CityParks Tennis, a free youth instructional program that serves over 7,000 children in parks throughout New York City each season.
Alison Tocci, Billie Jean King, Daniel Corona, and David Moore
Ken Solomon, Chairman and CEO Tennis Channel, and Junior Honoree Daniel Corona
Held each year at the US Open Tennis Championships, the event, hosted by Budd Mishkin, features a cocktail party, dinner, silent and lives auction, and tickets to the Open session matches in Arthur Ashe Stadium. This year, City Parks Foundation honored Eric Fromm, a native New Yorker and the former #38 tennis player in the world with the 2013 Vitas Gerulaitis Community Service Award. Fromm currently serves as the Managing Director for SPORTIME, which runs 144 state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor tennis courts.

The event also honored CityParks Tennis youth player, 14-year-old Daniel Corona, with the Billie Jean King Junior Award. Daniel, of Fresh Meadows, began playing tennis with the program at Cunningham Park, before he earned a spot in the Chase Aces year-round intermediate level program and this past summer landed himself in the City Parks Foundation Junior Academy presented by LACOSTE, an annual tournament-training program for experienced players held at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center.
Alison Tocci, David Moore, and Virginia Wade
CityParks Tennis, one of the largest municipal tennis programs in the country, provides free tennis lessons and activities at 40 parks citywide to children ages 6-16. CityParks Tennis also features an advanced training academy, which offers talented youth with financial need the opportunity to bring their game to a higher level of competition. Hundreds of academy graduates have earned college athletic scholarships and sectional and national rankings. Two graduates of the academy have played in the junior division at the US Open.

City Parks Foundation (CPF) is the only independent, nonprofit organization to offer park programs throughout the five boroughs of New York City. They work in over 750 parks citywide, presenting a broad range of free arts, sports, and education programs, and empowering citizens to support their parks on a local level. Its programs and community building initiatives reach more than 600,000 people each year, contributing to the revitalization of neighborhoods throughout New York City. The Southampton Historical Museum, under the direction of Executive Director Tom Edmonds with the backup of a committed Board of Trustees and a passionate new group of supporters has become a bustling arts center and become a jewel on the Hamptons cultural landscape. Last weekend the Museum hosted its annual Late Summer Cocktail Party on the sprawling lawns of the landmark Rogers Mansion on Meeting House Lane in Southampton.

Generously sponsored by longtime supporters Peter Hallock and Marge Sullivan who greeted every guest as they approached the walks, the twilight cocktail party drew several hundred guests that included Summer Colony folks, as well as, the scions of families who have resided here for 12 generations. Guests sipped cocktails and nibbled on savory treats form Schmidt's Market while discussing fall plans and destinations. Many took the opportunity to tour the magnificently restored former home of Captain Albert Rogers to view the Museum's current exhibition, "Fabulous Fish: Sculptures by John Rist, Jr.", a native son of Southampton and an owner of Herbert & Rist Liquor Store on Jobs Lane.
The restored former home of Captain Albert Rogers
Rist's fascination with marine life predates his interest in portraying them in wood and paint by many years. He uses plywood, old beach fencing, acrylic paint, and assorted items of hardware and transforms them into spectacular rough hewn, bas-relief, poly-chrome sculptures of vivid marine life. John Rist's sculptural portraits are unique. His subjects never pose for him, but then they don't need to. He knows everything about them, their shapes, their colors, and even in some cases their taste on the tongue. Rist's subjects are fish, creatures of the sea in all their glorious variety. His show will be on view through November 2.

Opening night party at the Museum of the City of New York for Picturing Central Park: Paintings by Janet Ruttenberg.
Last Thursday night at the Central Park Zoo, The Wildlife Conservation Society hosted its first Sip For The Sea benefit to support the New York Aquarium as it recovers from Hurricane Sandy. The evening featured pairings of sustainable wines from The Hess Collection with sustainable seafood and other special offerings from some of New York's top restaurants.

The New York Aquarium was devastated by the impact of the hurricane, just days before it was to break ground for an exciting new exhibit called Ocean Wonders: Sharks! Since that time plans to expand the Aquarium, developed in 2009 in partnership with the City of New York, have become a joint commitment to rebuild and transform the Aquarium's exhibits, programming, and Coney Island campus. The New York Aquarium reopened on a partial basis in May (to be fully reopened in the spring of 2016).

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Janet Ruttenberg
For more than a dozen years, New Yorker Janet Ruttenberg has been a quiet but remarkable fixture in Central Park, sketching the scenery on massive sheets of paper laid on the ground and then returning to her nearby studio to transform them into major works of art, but never exhibiting them publicly until now.

“Until this week, Janet Ruttenberg’s work has been a hidden treasure,” said Susan Henshaw Jones, Ronay Menschel Director of the Museum of the City of New York. “This is the chance for all New Yorkers – and visitors from around the world – to discover and celebrate her bold and fantastical paintings and watercolor studies. They are simply amazing!”

Nine works on paper and eight paintings, two with projected video, are in the exhibition.  These large-scale works—most measuring 15 feet in width—are supplemented by a selection of preparatory photographs and drawings, depicting the park in the height of its spring, summer, and fall glory.

The exhibition is designed by Wendy Evans Joseph of Cooper Joseph Studio and curated by Andrea Henderson Fahnestock.

On October 23rd Pierre Dumonteil and Franck Laverdin hosted a reception for an international crowd at Galerie Dumonteil bringing to New York the interior décor designed by Camille Roche (1894-1948) who was favored by the elite during the 1930s.

The exhibition "Splendor on the Riviera" was created for an English aristocratic family's dining room from their villa on the Côte d'Azur, which has been stored and preserved for over 70 years.
Camille Roche at Galerie Dumonteil
Camille Roche, laureat in 1920 of the American Foundation award for French Ideas and French Art, was the son of painter Odilon Roche, friend of Rodin and brother of decorator Serge Roche (1898-1988) – a family of important French artists following World War I. His painting style influenced by the Impressionists, is of animals, the countryside and family portraits, but he painted very important frescoes for the apartments and houses of other affluent patrons like Colette, Chanel, and the Rothschilds until his premature death. This is the first time since 1937 at the Wildenstein Gallery in New York, that Camille Roche's work is being exhibited, his atelier having been closed due to the tragic events of World War II for his family.

The event brings together this philanthropic group of bright-young-things to support BCNY and its programs for inner-city boys. Many of the guests hail from families who have a long history of involvement with The Boys' Club, often spanning several generations.

The Boys' Club of New York is the nation's oldest boys club, founded in 1876. Through its clubhouses and summer camp, BCNY offers programs that help boys and young men stay in school and go on to college, discover their individual musical and artistic talents, develop healthy bodies, and just have fun. Over 70% of BCNY boys live in single-parent, female-headed homes, most on public assistance. For membership dues of only $5 a year, the boys have access to gyms, swimming pools, computer labs, music studios, and a host of activities that they enjoy and that enrich their lives. BCNY helps build boys into men of character with strong values, discipline, and a positive perspective that counters the negative forces found on city streets.

For the occasion chef David Malbequi translated his menu into small bites in the form of roast chicken sliders, roast lamb tartines and mousse de foie de volaille, to name but a few. The whole roast suckling pig Basquaise was a highlight of the evening, ending with a selection of the restaurant's house-made cookies and ice creams.

Event sponsors included Bedell Cellars, Baldor Specialty Foods, D'Artagnan, as well as Citymeals-on-Wheels Official Sponsor FIJI Water. The evening was co-hosted by Avenue magazine's Randi Schatz.

The Grand Promenade of the David H. Koch Theater designed by Bronson van Wyck for ABT's annual Opening Night Fall Gala.
American Ballet Theatre (ABT) held its annual Opening Night Fall Gala benefit Wednesday night at the David H. Koch Theatre. More than 700 patrons, sponsors, supporters, friends, alumni and members of the Board of Trustees attended. The evening raised $1.65 million, a portion of which will support ABT's education and community outreach programs.

This is the first time in 37 years that ABT held its inaugural season at the David H. Koch Theater. The gala serves as the opening of ABT's fall season. Sponsored by Badgley Mischka and Clinique, the evening featured a one-time-only Gala performance highlighted by the World Premiere of Alexei Ratmansky'sThe Tempest led by Marcelo Gomes as Prospero, Daniil Simkin as Ariel and Herman Cornejo as Caliban. The program also featured a new production of George Balanchine's Theme and Variations led by Gillian Murphy and James Whiteside, and a Pièce d'Occasion choreographed by ABT Principal Dancer Marcelo Gomes, set to Souvenir de Florence by Tchaikovsky.

The spectacular décor of the dinner, held on the theater's Promenade, took center stage after the performance. Designed by Bronson van Wyck to reflect the mood and drama of the evening's world premiere of The Tempest, making the dinner and dancing portion of the evening a perfect nightcap to an exciting and beautiful evening of ballet.  There was a 180-foot hand painted mural depicting the stormy sea, wrought with cyclones and lightning.  Floor-to-ceiling cyclones were scattered about the vast room, and the feeling was enhanced by audiovisual effects.  Even the menu was served on tables with deep reds and purples, scattered with navigational curios including maps, telescopes and compasses, inspired by the wedding feast and nautical voyage in the performance.

Last Wednesday night Mark Gilbertson gave his annual autumn cocktail party at a private club on Park Avenue. More than 250 guests came by and as it always is with Mark's party, a good number stayed right to the end. New Yorkers love a good cocktail party in the middle of the week. They get to see old friends, new friends, people they've never seen before (a few) and it's just an easy, pleasant relief from the daily routine.

The Children’s Cancer & Blood Foundation (CCBF) hosted its annual “Breakthrough Ball” benefit gala on Tuesday evening, October 29, 2013 in the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel. A stunning success, the evening raised over $1 million to provide medication, chemotherapy and other life-saving treatments to thousands of children at the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology of New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

CCBF presented the coveted “Breakthrough Spirit” awards to Margo and John Catsimatidis, owner of Red Apple Group/Gristedes Food, and Amar’e Stoudemire, six-time NBA All-Star. The Catsimatidis are renowned for their philanthropic activities and their activism has fueled the hope of countless people through their community outreach and dedication to a plethora of charitable endeavors. Amar’e Stoudemire has proven himself an outstanding role model for children and adults alike, using his success and influence to creatively inspire and help at-risk youth. His foundation has changed the lives of many children, and Amar’e continues to spread his philanthropy through his commitment to multiple causes.
Barri Lieberman, Les Lieberman, Alexis Stoudemire, Amar'e Stoudemire, Dr. Patricia Giardina, Margo Catsimatidis, John Catsimatidis, Andrea Castimatidis Cox, and Christopher Nixon Cox
CCBF bestowed the prestigious Medical Breakthrough Award on former Chief of the Division and current Director of the Thalassemia Program, Dr. Patricia J. Giardina. A world-renowned expert on thalassemia, Dr. Giardina has fostered research that led to the development of new therapies to treat life-threatening blood diseases, and in doing so has effectively altered forever the way children receive treatment.

Long-time CCBF supporter, actor, commentator and philanthropist, Charles Grodin returned as emcee for the evening. Legendary Saturday Night Live alum Joe Piscopo, led a hugely successful live auction featuring Super Bowl tickets, a trip for 8 to Harmony Hill Jamaica, a custom cake by Buddy “The Cake Boss” Valastro and a Hamptons Golf Package with tee-offs at the most exclusive and highly rated courses. The magical evening concluded with a spectacular performance.
To the crowds delight, Tony Award winner Christian Hoff, Michael Longoria, Daniel Reichard and J.

Robert Spencer belted out songs including, “Walk Like a Man” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry.”

For over 60 years, CCBF has been proud to support the extraordinary team of doctors and researchers of the Division. CCBF’s support has attracted and retained a group of world- renowned experts on the treatment of multiple pediatric blood disorders and cancers, including thalassemia, hemophilia, sickle-cell anemia and leukemia. CCBF researchers have received international recognition for their work and are on the cusp of breakthroughs predicted to change the way the medical community treats children with cancer and blood diseases. Each year, our physicians treat more than 500 children through more than 8,000 inpatient and outpatient visits. Due in large part to funds raised at the Gala, CCBF is able to continue to support the life-saving work of our doctors and researchers.

The Saints from STUDIOS Architecture at Bette Midler’s New York Restoration Project’s Annual Hulaween Gala.
For one night, the Waldorf=Astoria on Park Avenue was turned into a voodoo-infused bayou for guests attending the star-studded-always-sold-out annual Hulaween Gala Benefit for Bette Midler’s New York Restoration Project (NYRP). Guestswere invited to unleash their ghastly, ghostly and ghoulish imaginations in the evening’s New Orleans-inspired festivities, hosted by Judy Gold, with a costume contest judged by Michael Kors, a performance by Harry Connick, Jr., and a world-class menu designed by chef John Besh.

Joining Ms. Midler and Martin von Haselberg, Harry Connick, Jr. and Jill Goodacre, Judy Gold, Michael Kors and Lance LePere, were Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Billy Crystal, Questlove, Nina Garcia, Glenn Close and David Shaw, John Heilemann, Kate Lear and Jon LaPook, John Demsey, Clifford Ross, Linda Allard, Jurate Kazickas and Roger Altman, Margo and Jimmy Nederlander, Tonne Goodman, Tim DiSalvo, Paul Cavaco, Behnaz Sarafpour, Lauren Buccellati, Kathy and Ben Needell, Dick and Ellen Levine, Todd DeGarmo, Amy Freitag – Executive Director of NYRP, and legions of other generous donors.

NYRP is a non-profit organization dedicated to reclaiming and restoring New York City parks, community gardens and open space in under-resourced communities. Unlike traditional conservancies that care for a specific place, NYRP works citywide, bringing private resources to spaces that lack adequate municipal support. In partnership with the City of New York, NYRPis also leading MillionTreesNYC– an initiative to plant and care for one million new trees throughout the five boroughs; nearly 800,000 trees have been planted, with the 1 millionth tree slated to go in the ground by fall 2015, two years ahead of schedule.

Since the organization’s founding by Bette Midler in 1995, NYRP has achieved dramatic results by investing in the greening and beautification of communities in need throughout New York City.  NYRPstaff, AmeriCorps members, and community and corporate volunteers have planted hundreds of thousands of trees, shrubs and flowers to support the restoration of public parks and community gardens; restored and revitalized four city parks in Northern Manhattan, and currently maintain Sherman Creek Park and Highbridge Park; and removed over 2,150 tons of garbage from the City’s green spaces.

Ms. Midler presented Michael Kors with the “Wind Beneath My Wings” Award for Leadership.

As a master of visual communication and storytelling, Douglas Little Creative transformed the Waldorf Ballroom and stage into a steaming French Quarter nightspot by way of “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil,” with a few Vampires thrown in for good measure.  Added to the mix were the requisite Hula Dancers and non-traditional “traditional” Halloween objects that summoned the spirits to LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL.

Co-Chairs
for the evening were: Linda Allard; The Coca-Cola Company; Todd DeGarmo; The Durst Organization; Vernon Evenson; and Ignatius J. Reilly.

Orange and Black polka dot balloons filled the entrance stairs to Doubles for their annual Halloween Celebrations. We especially loved the little people's costumes at the Ghosties and Goodies party. While Daisy Doodle painted 175 little faces, Magic Al had them laughing at and clapping to his many magic tricks. And after grilled cheese squares, chicken McDoubles and Halloween icing cookies, DJ Matt and MC Kevin had the dance floor filled. And nd on the way out ... every child was given a colorful Trick-or-Treat bag filled with lots and lots of candy.
Oyster Bay, New York ... Raynham Hall Museum was in high spirits and style on October 25th at a fabulous Halloween event celebrating the museum's reputation as a haunted house. Costumed or black-clad guests were greeted by some fine feathered friends -- owls and ravens -- on the arms of handlers from Volunteers for Wildlife Hospital and Rehabilitation Center at Bailey Arboretum.

Guests then ventured through the dimly lit Colonial and Victorian mansion, decorated with Victorian-inspired spirit photos, wandering out eventually into a spookily decorated tent, where they danced the night away to classic rock blues and punk courtesy of the Mortimer-Lyons band.

The very creative and enthusiastic revelers were disguised as a wide variety of characters, from ancient history to Spy vs. Spy, including Madame Bovary, Titanic survivors, colonial dames and Fifty Shades of Grey's Anastasia.

Museum staff and happy volunteers impersonated moon beams, with the help of a little judiciously-applied face paint and silvery costumes. Treats included witches' fingers and sweet and savory concoctions from the cauldron of GreenPear catering in Locust Valley. Underwriting was graciously provided by Connie Cincotta and by Post Wine and Spirits.

The Altman Foundation paid tribute to 100 years of service to the people of New York City — reflecting the mission established by its founder, "retail prince" and revolutionary philanthropist Benjamin Altman — at a Centennial Celebration on Thursday, October 24 at the New York Public Library, Stephen A. Schwartzman Building, in Manhattan.

Benjamin Altman, the visionary who founded B. Altman & Co. department stores, established the Foundation upon his death, directing in his will that his fortune be used to "the benefit of charitable institutions in the City of New York." Since then, the Foundation has quietly granted a quarter-billion dollars to help hundreds of underserved communities around the five boroughs. The Foundation today makes annual grants of 11 to 12 million dollars to organizations supporting education, health, strengthening communities, and arts and culture.
Dr. Anthony Marx
The evening featured a discussion among Reynold Levy, President of Lincoln Center; Darren Walker, President of the Ford Foundation; and Veronica M. White, Commissioner of the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, on the topic of philanthropy and New York City — past, present and future. The discussion was moderated by Altman Foundation President, Jane B. O'Connell. Presentations to the Altman Foundation were made by Dennis M. Walcott, Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education, on behalf of Mayor Bloomberg, and Dr. Anthony Marx, President and CEO of The New York Public Library.

"Benjamin Altman's was an astonishing life," said Mr. Levy. "He was a successful and benevolent businessman and an energetic philanthropist. More than a century before Bill Gates and Warren Buffet even conceived of The Giving Pledge, Altman amassed a fortune – one billion in constant dollars – and gave it all away. His legacy is remarkable."
Students and alumni from the Jazz at Lincoln Center Middle School Jazz Academy
A celebratory reception followed with more than 450 guests representing Altman Foundation grantees, funding colleagues and friends from throughout the years.

"When Benjamin Altman started this foundation, his goal was to serve the people of New York City," said Ms. O'Connell. "It is a wonderful day to be celebrating Benjamin Altman's legacy to New York. Today we honor this man, the City he cared for so deeply, and the extraordinary nonprofit organizations that have been Altman grantees over the past 100 years. His legacy continues every day in the Altman Foundation's work in education, health, arts and culture, and strengthening communities."
Brooklyn Youth Chorus Academy
The evening's program featured musical performances from the Brooklyn Youth Chorus Academy and students and alumni from the Jazz at Lincoln Center Middle School Jazz Academy. The Centennial Celebration was produced Ny Whitaker of Events by Ny.

The mission of the Altman Foundation reflects much of the personality and vision of its founder, Benjamin Altman. Altman was a unique and generous individual whose dry goods store, B. Altman & Co., founded in 1865 on Third Avenue and 10th Street, became a major department store. Altman moved his store from 10th Street to 19th Street and Sixth Avenue and finally, in 1906, to the landmark building at 34th Street and Fifth Avenue. Altman's reflected the commitment of its founder to service to its customers and generosity to its employees. Until its closing in 1989, Altman's was beloved by generations of New Yorkers.

Last Monday night, Creel and Gow, the very chic art and objets boutique on East 70th off Lex just two doors down from the Bunny Mellon townhouse, held a cocktail reception for Ardmore Ceramic Art and Cora Sheibani Jewelry.

And they all came running (well, sort of). The Upper East Side glittered with guests mingling through the treasure trove of Creel and Gow. I know that sounds like a press release, but that’s how it felt. The proprietors, Gow, and Creel operate on an aesthetic that presents that.
There were a lot of friends and friends of friends. The hosts Bettina Zilkha, Dennis Basso and Bob Colacello greeted their guests and everyone was just happy to be there. Everyone including Marisa Brown, Sharon Bush, Tiffany Dubin, Pierre Durand, Whitney Fairchild, Lisa Fine, Mark Gilbertson, Nina Griscom, Valesca Guerrand Hermes, Alex Hitz, Carlos Mota and Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia.

Furthermore they were there to see what Messrs Gow and Creel have come up with.

Ardmore Ceramics at Creel and Gow.
Ardmore Ceramic Art was born on a farm named Ardmore in Kwazulu, Natal, where Fee Halsted lived with her family.

Fee is a renowned South African ceramicist, and the Ardmore enterprise is her brainchild. Her perceptive mind and initiative led to the creation of a venue for some of the many unemployed people in her area to channel their innate artistic energy and share their vision by utilizing a culturally traditional medium, i.e. clay, and the earth of their land.

Wherever Fee recognizes or senses talent, she invites the person into her fold, teaches and trains the candidate to find his/her own voice and fly with it whether he/she is a sculptor or a painter. This accounts for Ardmore's fascinating collaboration between sculptor and painter. The artists are given complete freedom in the choice of their subject matter and the way it is expressed. This leads to endless surprises and innovations. The entire team benefits from the diverse dynamics and ideas.

Each work is one of a kind. It encompasses an artist's vision, emotion or humor expressed in an intrinsic African way. The works are unique because they are constantly evolving with the artist's mastery of the medium.  Each piece captures a moment in time which defies duplication.

In 2010, Fee was honored by the Woman’s Campaign International, a Philadelphia-based organization, in recognition of her contribution towards empowering woman. With this award she has joined previous celebrated honorees such as Hillary Clinton, Paul Farmer, and Joe Biden.

In addition, Fee is very involved with HIV/AIDS education.  Ardmore worked in conjunction with expert healthcare fieldworkers to educate the artists about prevention and provide medication to those affected by the virus.  Ardmore’s 25th anniversary in 2010 was especially significant for Fee as it was the first year that there were no AIDS casualties at Ardmore.

Cora Sheibani was born in 9 March 1980 to Christina and Bruno Bischofberger, a prominent art dealer in Switzerland. From an early age, she benefitted from an environment dedicated to modern and contemporary art and design.

In January 2001, while studying at NYU, Cora decided that she wanted to design jewelry, and she started her first jewelry sketchbook.  Interested in learning all facets of jewelry making, she studied lost wax casting and made her first piece of jewelry in the same year.  In the summer of 2002 she completed a degree in gemology from the GIA in London.  In December 2002, she launched her own jewelry label under the name Cora Sheibani, in London’s Mayfair.
Cora Sheibani at Creel and Gow.
Cora continues to make single jewels while occasionally putting together a whole collection. In 2006, she published a book of her Valence collection, with text by Ettore Sottsass, (one of her early supporters and influences). The collection was a series of unique 18kt gold wire pieces.

Since then she has made many other pieces using the same wire volume idea and incorporating gems. The Copper Mould Collection was launched in New York in 2008. These pieces are inspired by the shapes and graphics of baked goods and copper moulds. Cora Sheibani published a cookbook to accompany this collection.

In September 2011, she launched a collection called Clouds with a Silver Lining. This collection, like the previous one, is heavily influence by shapes that are both abstract and those encountered daily. She used the unique quality of silver. That silver can become tarnished over time is usually considered a drawback, but this unique quality has been creatively incorporated into the design. The Cloud collection was first presented on dresses Cora Sheibani commissioned Edeline Lee to design especially for the occasion.
More from the Cora Sheibani collection.
In 2012 Cora Sheibani created the line inspired by Cacti forms. She made a book to accompany this collection in what has now become a series. This collection started off with large bracelets using ‘etoile’ settings in rings, as they resemble the spikes on cacti. This collection was largely made in Paris where Cora Sheibani now produces half her pieces.

Cora Sheibani has had jewelry exhibitions in many places including London, Zurich, Paris and New York and is a Wallpaper2011 design award winner for best material.

Located in the former stables of Grosvenor Atterbury’s townhouse, Creel and Gow is on the Northwest corner of Lexington Avenue and East 70th Street.

Peter Paine, Jimmy Brown, Richard Dreyfuss, Audrey Gruss, Dr. Dwight Evans, Dr. Eric Nestler, and Susan Jablonski at the Hope for Depression Research Foundation's annual "HOPE" Luncheon Seminar.
Last Thursday at 583 Park Avenue, the Hope For Depression Research Foundation hosted its annual "Hope" luncheon seminar. Actor Richard Dreyfuss was the guest of honor and speaker. Dreyfuss talked about confiding his bipolar disorder publicly in an effort to come to realistic terms with it as a "disorder" and not something to hide or feel shame about. The HFDR Foundation was founded by Audrey Gruss to raise the profile of Depression as a common problem. Mrs. Gruss says that it is has become even more prominent in men right now. She believes there are solutions that can be found through research.

There is nothing rare about depression. It is a common condition found in all animals, to varying degrees, and often depending on how they are treated in their personal environment under whatever their personal circumstances. At the luncheon Seminar Dreyfuss talked about how important it was to put it out there. In the light. We are not alone.

The HFDR Foundation in its still short life span has already begun shed light on the issue with their campaigns. Visit www.hopefordepression.org to learn more.

The Carter Burden Center for the Aging hosted its 42nd Anniversary Gala Wednesday at the Mandarin Oriental. Founded by the late Carter Burden, the "center without walls" provides integral support to seniors age 60 and over in various locations throughout East Manhattan.

The theme for the gala was “Art Works” – most fitting in a year that saw the opening of both the Carter Burden Gallery in the heart of the Chelsea art district, and expanded art classes at a new Macy’s Creative Arts Center in East Harlem. A major tenet of the center’s mission being  to support the efforts of older people to live safely and with dignity, the evening focused on a continuum of programs the Carter Burden Center provides to keep their participants engaged in their community via attending, practicing, and creating new art.

They honored JohnC. Phelan, who is a Co-Founder and Co-Managing Partner at MSD Capital. Mr. Phelan and his wife, Amy, are great patrons of the arts, boasting an impressive collection of their own. Mr. Phelan also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Aspen Art Museum, the Whitney Museum and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and is on the Investment Committee for the SMU Endowment, the North American Advisory Board of the London School of Economics and the Harvard Business School – Board of Deans Advisors, in addition to serving on the Board of the Federal Enforcement Homeland Security Foundation.
Carter Burden/Leonard Covello Senior Program Artists
Gala co-chairs Jeff Weber, president of York Capital Management and Chairman of the Board of the Carter Burden Center for the Aging and Glenn Fuhrman, Co-Managing Partner at MSD Capital, joined Mr. Phelan in addressing attendees. After a brief film featuring both Mr. and Mrs. Phelan, as well as some re-emerging artists that have had recent exhibitions at the Carter Burden Gallery, Susan Burden, Board Member and widow to Carter, and William Dionne, Executive Director of the organization, touched on the necessity of the Carter Burden Center's programming.

Dinner was at 8 (after a 7 PM cocktail reception) and it was over by 9:45. A wonderful evening in support of a worthy cause. www.carterburdencenter.org.

On Monday, October 28th supporters of the Park Avenue Tree Lighting gathered at the International Fine Art and Antique Dealers Show (IFAADS) for a lively reception hosted by Anna and Brian Haughton and First Republic Bank. The Park Avenue Tree Lighting, a popular New York tradition dating back to 1945, is made possible each year by the community's contributions to The Fund for Park Avenue. It's a wonderful example of the role that private philanthropy can play in the life of our City.

This year marked the IFAADS's 25th anniversary. The event featured Mario Buatta signing his just-released book "Fifty Years of American Decoration." Potterton Books generously donated a percentage of the proceeds to The Fund. The self-described, "Prince of Chintz" held court and entertained old friends, clients and new fans with his signature quips and jokes. He personalized every book and by the end of the evening all were sold!

Fountain House, the world's leading treatment center for people living with serious mental illness, celebrated its Sixth Annual Fall Fête on November 6, 2013. The event educates an audience of young professionals about Fountain House's unique "working community" treatment model for mental illness and its mission to fight the stigma associated with it.

Event Chairs Byrdie Bell, Madeleine and Alexandre Desmarais, Jeremy L. Goldstein, Kathleen and Reha Kocatas, Katherine Lipton and Alex Lipman, Jennifer Oken, Lil Phillips, Sarah Simmons, Katie Tozer, Kiliaen Van Rensselaer, and Katie Zorn were joined by over 200 guests.
Katie Zorn and Cheryl Lynch
The event was generously sponsored by Alex Roepers and Lilly USA, LLC.

The Associates presented the Fountain House Advocacy Award to filmmaker, physician, and mental health advocate Delaney Ruston, MD. Dr. Ruston grew up in the shadow of her dad’s schizophrenia and has spent years caring for the underserved.  Her award-winning film, Hidden Pictures, weaves her story and those of individual families in India, China, Africa, France and the U.S. dealing with bipolar illness, depression, schizophrenia, and anxiety.  The documentary will air on PBS in May of 2014.

Two Fountain House members, whose college educations were temporarily interrupted because of their illness, received The Danny Zorn Scholarship. Co-Chair Katie Zorn presented the awards and one of the members shared their personal story. The Scholarship is named after Katie’s brother, Danny, who tragically lost his battle with mental illness in October 2012.

Serious mental illness affects 23 million people in the United States each year. The stigma, rejection, and isolation that accompany mental illness are often as damaging and debilitating as the illness itself.

Fountain House reduces the devastating social impact of mental illness. Every day, hundreds of members choose to come to Fountain House to contribute their talents, learn new skills, access opportunities, and forge friendships.

Members and staff operate successful employment, education, wellness, and housing programs and work as partners to perform all the functions that keep our community going. Our activities and programs are designed to provide opportunities while producing the desire and confidence to pursue them.  Working together, we create a culture that transforms lives.

The Fountain House model has been replicated in more than 400 locations in 30 countries and 32 states and currently serves more than 55,000 people with mental illness worldwide.  As originators of this approach, we provide leadership by constantly advancing the practice and by leading the conversation around mental health recovery.

The 23rd annual Glamour Women of the Year awards was held Monday night at Carnegie Hall and featured stars as both honorees and presenters, including Barbra Streisand and Katie Couric. The awards aim to showcase women for their outstanding work in entertainment, philanthropy, education, fashion and politics. The hit of the evening was Malala Yousafzai, the young Pakistani education activist who survived being shot in the head by the Taliban a year ago this past October.

The awards and gala, which raises money for charities, will direct its monies this year to The Malala Fund, which supports programs that directly impact the quality and accessibility of education for girls.

Barbra Streisand won the Lifetime Achievement award. Among her philanthropic projects was funding a cutting-edge research center for heart disease at the Barbra Streisand Women's Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles. Katie Couric presented the award.

Despite the entertainment star power in the room such as Streisand and her 21st century successor, Lady Gaga, the heroine and real star of the evening was Malala -- "The Girls' Hero" and honoree of the the Women of the Year Fund Initiative. Now 16, she was shot by the Taliban because of her outspoken advocacy for educating girls. Rushed to Britain for treatment, she has recovered and become the world's leading advocate for girls' rights, wrote a memoir, and even was one of the youngest people ever nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. She got her award from America Ferrera.

Other winners included Lady Gaga, for her anti-bullying campaign; Christy Turlington Burns and Liya Kebede, for their foundations to support better maternal health care around the world, and the "Couple of the Year," Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly, who received their award for their gun-safety campaign after the former Arizona congresswoman nearly died in a shooting in Tucson.

"Each of these women is a force individually, but combine them and you have something magical — a group of leaders who can change the world," said Cindi Leive, editor-in-chief of Glamour.

Elie Wiesel has written 36 books.  Among his prizes are the Nobel Peace Prize and the Congressional Gold Medal. When he praises a book, we should listen. Last Wednesday, he hosted a book party for Michael Alexiades’s highly praised first novel Night Harvest. The book is being heralded as the best medical thriller in the last 35 years.  Wiesel wrote, “For all those who love medical thrillers will find in Michael Alexiades’s first novel a source of great pleasure and satisfaction.”

Wiesel is not the only one to praise the novel. Within the first week of publication Night Harvest has four 5-star reviews on Amazon, has been selling rapidly at The Corner Bookstore, the Mysterious Bookshop, Barnes & Noble and the usual websites.  At press time, four film companies including Mandeville Films producers The Fighter, which was nominated for seven Academy awards in 2011, are in discussion with Marianne Strong, the author’s agent.
Eile Wiesel, Michael Alexiades, Sophia Alexiades, and Gregory Alexiades
Alexiades has followed the universal advice given to writers: write about what you know.

He is a celebrated attending Orthopedic Surgeon at three of New York’s top hospitals, Special Surgery, Weill-Cornell Medical Center and Lenox Hill Hospital. He is also an assistant professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Cornell Medical School.

The handsome 6’2 foot doctor has been a guest specialist on CBS TV’s The Doctors and is scheduled to return in December.  Before that Dr. Thomas Sculco, Surgeon-in-Chief Hospital of Special Surgery will host a book party at the Hospital. Sally Grossman hosts one in Woodstock at the Bear Café, The New York Athletic Club will hold one for members only.  In December, Alexiades will join Nelson DeMille for the Union League Club’s Annual Book Fair.

The publication-day signing was held at Weill Cornell Medical Center’s Griffis Faculty Club.  Over 120 appeared to cheer the Doctor and to buy and have him autograph copies of the book.  Among those celebrating were Anne Eisenhower, Anthony Haden-Guest, Maggie Norris, Rosalyn and Irwin Engelman, Alyce Faye Cleese, Anita Meltzer, Dr. Noel Armanakas and his wife Dr. Macrene Armanakas (sister of the author), film producer GeorgeStephanopoulos and wife Elena, dress designer Carter Smith with public relations executive Debbie Dickinson, Patty Owen the fashion model who has just finished penning her memoirs, Massey Knakal’s Robert Burton, Iris Gordon Rossi, Lord Colin Campbell, the Diary’s Jill Lynne, URN’s Marcy MacDonald, Pierre Van Goethem and theauthor’s wife Dr. Patrice Buonocore.

Audubon Young Members 2013 Fall Benefit Host Comittee
Last Wednesday evening, the Audubon Young Members of New York took flight south to the Meatpacking District’s AVENUE to flock for the AYM Fall Benefit.  Guests enjoyed cocktails courtesy of Avenue and organic vodka sponsor American Harvest, nibbled on pizza courtesy of Artichoke and danced to the rug cutting tunes of DJ Luther Riggs.  A most festive evening, one could watch the twirling about of CFDA designer Carlos Falchi with Benefit Chair Ann Morrison Calvert and Falchi daughters.

An expansive silent auction spread including everything from Polo Lessons in Greenwich, CT to a piece of art by Faust was up for bids. 100% of the funds raised go to support and sustain Audubon New York’s important education, advocacy, and on the ground conservation efforts. The New York Women’s Foundation® has worked hard to make New York a better place and ensure it remains a city of possibility for us all. This evening’s gala is a wonderful chance to not only raise support for this outstanding organization, but also to recognize several of its supporters for their unwavering dedication to the foundation’s mission: Carolina Herrera; Ruth Porat and Morgan Stanley; and Darren Walker and the Ford Foundation. Together, we celebrate everything that women contribute to the five boroughs each day and look forward to a stronger, more equitable future for all New Yorkers.

Now therefore, I, Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of the City of New York, do hereby proclaim Thursday, November 14, 2013, in the City of New York as: “New York Women’s Foundation Day.”

Christodora works with New York's less-privileged, urban youth to develop environmental awareness, leadership skills and academic success through stimulating educational and outdoor programs. The organization reaches 2,000 mixed-income students each year, in the sixth through the twelfth grades - three-quarters of whom have never been outside of their city walls before. Programs take place during and after school in partnership with the New York City's parks, museums, and schools. In addition, the organization's wilderness programs take the students out of the city, on weekends and during school vacations, to the Manice Education Center in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. Since its founding in 1897, Christodora's programs have grown exponentially since its modest beginnings, where the organization sponsored social and cultural activities, such as George Gershwin's first public concert in 1914.
