On Saturday, February 1, the New York Philharmonic held its third-annual Chinese New Year Gala. Over 300 guests attended and $1 million was raised for the Philharmonic.

The celebratory evening ushered in the Year of the Horse with a Gala concert highlighting the cultural heritage of China and America and honoring the Chinese-American community. The concert program featured Beijing-born pianist Yuja Wang performing Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini; Taiwanese-American violinist Cho-Liang Lin performing Dvořák's Romance for Violin and Orchestra; and Chinese-born cellist Jian Wang performing Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme. The three soloists together performed Tan Dun's The Triple Resurrection, which includes music from the composer's scores for the Martial Arts Trilogy, comprising Hero; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; and The Banquet.Song Zuying, the renowned folk and pop singer who hails from the Hunan province, joined the Orchestra for several Chinese folk songs, wearing traditional attire.

For the third-consecutive year, a traditional Dragon Dance was performed by the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company on Lincoln Center's Josie Robertson Plaza preceding the concert and inside Avery Fisher Hall throughout the evening. The dancers were joined on the plaza by 40 American children from the National Dance Institute performing Chinese New Year: The Year of the Horse, inspired by Mongolian folk dances.

Guests of the Chinese New Year Gala arrived at Avery Fisher Hall beginning at 6:00 p.m. for an hour-long cocktail reception on the Grand Promenade. The concert began at 7:30 p.m., followed by a traditional Chinese attire/black-tie dinner, also on the Grand Promenade.

Monday night at the Pierre, the Drama League hosted its 30th annual benefit gala — A Musical Celebration of Broadway — and honored Neil Patrick Harris. Among those performing or speaking of the honoree were Judith Light, Kal Penn, Norm Lewis, Audra McDonald, Tim Gunn, Stephen Colbert, Tyrone Jackson, Zachary Levi, Patrick O'Neill, Anthony Rapp, Malcolm Gets, Kate Jennings Grant.

The Drama League galas are not "roasts" but rather tributes to the talents they honor. The performances are affectionate as well. But Neil Patrick Harris evokes something more than that. He's had a long career in what is still a short life, and he's participated and performed ably, successfully. He's admired and respected for his work as well as his openness about his private life and his family. And judging from the audience's response to it all, I'd say he's even beloved by a lot of people. A good evening, and fun.
