The American Federation of Arts (AFA) held its 2014 Spring Luncheon on Wednesday, June 4th. This year's speaker was acclaimed fashion designer, photographer, and passionate collector and patron of the arts, Reed Krakoff. He was joined in conversation by Margaret Russell, editor- in-chief of Architectural Digest. |
Reed Krakoff is Chief Creative Officer & President of the Reed Krakoff brand. Drawing from more than twenty years of experience designing for iconic American fashion houses, Krakoff has elevated his New York–based label into a global luxury brand and has himself become internationally recognized for his contributions to the industries of fashion, art and design. Krakoff currently sits on the board of his alma mater, Parsons The New School for Design in New York, where he mentors aspiring fashion and design students. From 2006 to 2010, he served as the vice president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). In 2012, Krakoff was named the Accessory Designer of the Year by the CFDA for his namesake collection, an honor previously bestowed to him in 2001 and 2004. He was most recently honored at the 2012 Style Awards as Accessories Designer of the Year. |

The benefit, emceed by Partnership with Children program alumni, Jose Mendez and Marcel Torres, honored Bank of America Consumer Banking Technology & Operations Chief Information Officer, Bridget O'Connor, MediaVest USA President, Investment, Activation & Operations, Christine Merrifield, and Bernstein Global Wealth Management Director, Senior Investment Advisor and Principal, Kim Isaacs Katz. The evening raised over $760,000 in support of Partnership with Children’s work to address the traumatic effects of poverty that prevent children from succeeding academically and socially, and schools from educating their students. Partnership with Children currently collaborates with 54 public schools and more than 17,000 youth throughout all five boroughs of New York City. |
Margaret Crotty took to the stage to surprise Partnership with Children's Associate Executive Director of Programs Barbara Cavallo to honor her for 30 years of work with the organization. Crotty addressed the audience, including supporters Joan and George Hornig, Almudena and Pablo Legorreta, Jane and David Preiser, Alex Jukowitz, Linda and Ken Mortenson, Madeline and George Long, Linda Boff, Nancy Ivers, Bebe and Doug Broadwater and Eileen and James Motherway, quoting Maya Angelou who said, "When you learn, teach, when you get, give." Guests were treated to a surprise rap performance by Qasim Fazal and Naseim White, two current Partnership with Children participants. |

Komen® Greater NYC honored innovation and impact in the breast cancer field at The Impact Awards luncheon, which took place on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 in the Grand Ballroom of the New York Hilton Midtown. During the Luncheon, Komen Greater NYC saluted the following individuals and organizations committed to raising awareness, saving lives and eradicating breast cancer: José Baselga, MD, PhD (Physician of Impact Award) — Physician-in-Chief, Memorial Hospital, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center– the award was presented by Komen Greater NYC’s Medical Advisory Chair and Chief of the Department of Surgery at Maimonides Medical Center and founder and head of their Brooklyn Breast Cancer Center, Patrick Borgen, MD God’s Love We Deliver (Community Impact & Innovation Award)— Accepted by Karen Pearl, President & CEO – the award was presented by director, producer, singer, actress and God’s Love board member Tamara Tunie Pfizer, Inc. Through events like The Impact Awards and the Komen Greater NYC Race for the Cure, Komen Greater NYC funds local breast health education and outreach, screening coordination, treatment and support service programs for uninsured, underinsured, ethnic minority, immigrant, LGBT and disabled residents of the five boroughs of New York City, all of Long Island, and Westchester and Rockland Counties. Catching up: A couple weeks ago they held the opening preview night of the current "Multiple Exposures: Jewelry & Photography" exhibition at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD). VIP guests and patrons got the chance to experience an avant-garde curated jewelry exhibition by Ursula Ilse-Neuman with embedded videos and photographs, and pose for an 'Auto-Selfie' by Hasselblad. Hasselblad partnered with the Museum of Arts and Design to install a customized 'Auto-Selfie: The Hasselblad Photo Booth' providing a unique, interactive experience for museum-goers to experience at the "Multiple Exposures: Jewelry and Photography" exhibition. Those inclined had the opportunity to memorialize their visit to the exhibit by having their picture taken with one of Hasselblad's newest luxury consumer digital cameras. The photos are available to share instantly via social media and email through September 2014. |
More catching up: Last month at at the National Arts Club, Animal Care & Control of NYC hosted their 7th Annual Spring Fling. Fellow animal lovers joined together for an evening of cocktails generously provided by Belvedere Vodka, silent and live auctions led by professional auctioneer from Christie's, Toby Usnik, music provided by DJ Erik Rydju, and most importantly to meet some adoptable dogs and cats in their new Mobile Adoption Center! Proceeds from the event were directed to the Animal Care Fund and used to ensure loving care for thousands of cats, dogs and rabbits, and promote their adoption into loving homes. |
