The calibre of work this year is second to none with evidence that the exhibitors have saved their very best treasures for this 10-day extravaganza. The prize for Best Stand went to Washington DC based exhibitor Geoffrey Diner with his new-to-market Roy Lichtenstein painting ‘Puzzle Portrait’ exhibited alongside design classics by Marc Newson, providing an inspirational mix of styles and eras.

The prize for Object of the Year went to a rare Adolfo Wildt bronze cast created in 1921 from a marble sculpture carved by Wildt in 1911 - the Vir Temporis Acti, exhibited by Carlo Orsi on the stand of Alessandra di Castro.

The American Museum of Natural History's Junior Council concluded its 2012-2013 season with a special discussion in the Hayden Planetarium by the Museum’s curator of astrophysics, Michael Shara, followed by a cocktail and jazz reception on the Museum’s Arthur Ross Terrace.

Astronomers have been fascinated by exploding stars—novae and supernovae—for centuries. Recent advances in observational technology and computing power have enabled astronomers to assemble a “Tree of Stellar Death,” similar to the Tree of Life assembled by modern biologists. Dr. Shara described the processes that lead to stellar explosions, and how several types of erupting stars are related to each other—the same way that butterflies are related to caterpillars. He also described ongoing research at the Museum that aims to establish new branches in the Tree of Stellar Death.
