Dancing became more expressive as the night moved on at the Southampton Hospital's 55th Annual Gala.
Swanning With Adrian

Yes. I went to the Hospital party-the 55th Annual Southampton Hospital Gala, to be more precise. There is always much moaning and groaning about attending this one — it used to be over 1,000 at a buffet, in a tent on grass, and the formula has always been, buy a dinner ticket, support The Hospital, grab a drink, and run for the hills.

Jean Shafiroff, Bob Chaloner, and Audrey Gruss
This year it was certainly more luxurious. Apparently the ArtHampton fellow agreed to leave his tent on the Elks Club property, for the party. A gracious gesture, indeed, and one that saved them north of $100,000. It was air conditioned, and sleek, though still felt like an art venue, and the waiters clomping across the plywood (though rug covered) floor, shook us up, as if the F train were coursing under us.

The theme, originally Marvelous Madrid, or something, was changed by the Honorary Chair, Audrey Gruss, to ‘Forward the Future’, a very Epcot Center title, if I’ve ever heard one.

Apparently, a ‘blue future memo’ went out, either psychically or truly, as Audrey and the Chair, Jean Shafiroff, wore dazzling aqua numbers-Audrey in an icy satin number, and Jean in what is becoming her iconic Cinderella look, in a massive, ruffled concoction, that had people tripping over her, and of course, cameras popping. Sadly for them, the little man in the blue jacket (that would’ve matched the gals) was in Newport.

After interminable cocktails (6:30-8:00!!!) people milled in to the dinner tent, the buffet making it less urgent to sit. I asked my buffet server if the brown bits in the trough were filet.

“No. Beef.”

“Filet is beef," I gently reminded him. “I say what they tell me," he retorted.

Hmm, perhaps I should note who the caterer was. “I’ll have to check," the same server told me. Didn’t he work for them? They all sported blue ties, and the check in girls, blue satin frocks that they got to keep. Red and another shade of blue Plexiglas slabs were suspended from the ceiling and votive candles flickered in plexi-centerpieces. Perhaps a patriotic ‘Future Forward’?

Chuck Scarborough masterfully emceed, though after Hospital President, Bob Chaloner spoke, and it was time for Ms. Shafiroff to speak, interest has waned, and folks seemed to talk right over her. Perhaps she should’ve taken a page from Bob Wilson’s playbook, and gave the group a silent stare for the first 3 minutes.

Bob was there, probably amused at the contrast to his Watermill event. Victoria Wyman was his date. Others included Hilary Geary Ross and Wilbur Ross, Jamie and Peter Gregory, Gillian Miniter, Dr. John Anton, Somers Farkas (in an unusual leather and muslin dress, that suggested a Mad Max ‘Future’), Robert Zimmerman, Kathy and Rick Hilton, Marianna and George Kauffman, Debbie Bancroft, Christopher Mason, Jean Remmel Little (the first and forever Hospital angel), Lise and Michael Evans, the impossibly beautiful Zoullas clan, B. Michael, Felicia Taylor, Margo and Jimmy Nederlander, Darcy and George Gould, and lots of others, whom, if they ever need, will be grateful that Audrey and Marty Gruss gave $5 million for the Gruss Heart and Stroke Center. The evening raised $1.7 million for the hospital.

Dancing became more expressive as the night moved on, with the nurses and young doctors being the most attractive people out there. We clomped back across the plywood, grabbed our goody bag (goodier than usual, though somewhat incongruously, containing old CD’s of ‘W’ and ‘Star Trek’), and trekked home for a midnight snack of filet. Or beef.
