Last Tuesday, The Cinema Society & MCM with Grey Goose hosted a screening of Radius TWC's "Lovelace" at the Museum of Modern Art on 11 West 53rd Street. For some of us, it was only yesterday. Because for some of us, eyes were opened like never before. It was “Deep Throat,” a porn film made in 1972 for about $25,000 that made an international film star – albeit limited casting-wise – of Linda Susan Boreman using the name Linda Lovelace. It’s the only porn film that drew a huge mixed audience of all ages. Everyone (who had the curiosity) wanted to have a look. Kenny Lane tells the story of going to the movies with Diana Vreeland. One day he asked her if there were anything special she’d like to see. She said, “Yes, I’d like to see that picture about ... the lace ...” He picked up on it right away, “Oh, you mean ‘Deep Throat.’” YES! Forty years later in a culture drenched in porn that propelled this phenomenon called the Internet, “Deep Throat” sounds like a joke. That was its secret – the title. I never saw it but for many people, again – of all ages and sexual inclinations, it was seminal. It became the quintessential visual document of what was known worldwide at the time as the Sexual Revolution. Although within a decade that revolutioin was blighted by AIDS, its influence all these years later is now entirely cultural. And this girl, Linda Susan Boreman, child of an abusive marriage, child of hard luck and gritty disappointment, became, in a way, a messenger, looked upon with simple respect. It was all rather amazing. |
The Cinema Society evening brought out Sharon Stone (who plays Linda’s mother in the film). Sharon Stone’s forever famous sexual moments on screen are a direct result of that film. Amanda Seyfried plays Linda. Peter Sarsgaard is Chuck Traynor, the husband, and Adam Brody is Harry Reems who plays opposite Linda in “Deep Throat.” Harry Reems was the only famous porn star of that era – when the word was rarely used in speaking but usually found only in print. (Look him up on Wikipedia). There was a party afterwards at the new Refinery Rooftop on 63 West 38th Street. Most of the cast were there: Amanda Seyfried, Sharon Stone, Peter Sarsgaard, Hank Azaria, Adam Brody. As well as Debi Mazar, Chris Noth, Cory Hardrict, Brian Gattas, directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, writer Andy Bellin, producers Heidi Jo Markel, Laura Rister, Jason Weinberg and Jim Young, RADiUS co-presidents Jason Janego and Tom Quinn. |
Also: James Marsden, Zachary Quinto, Justin Long, Christine Lahti, Lou Reed, Zosia Mamet, Gloria Steinem, Ivanka Trump, Zac Posen, Joan Smalls, Hannah Davis, Carrie Preston (True Blood), Estelle, Nicole Trunfio, Gary Clark Jr, Cecily Strong (SNL), Valerie Simpson (Ashford & Simpson), B-52'sFred Schneider, Julie Taymor, Heather Matarazzo, Ingrid SischyandSandra Brant, Terry George, Oren Moverman, Peter Vack, Catharine MacKinnon, Peter Cincotti, Samantha Mathis, Ebon Moss, Christian Campbell and America Olivo, Rosanna Scotto (Good Day New York), Greg Kelly (Good Day New York), Christiane Seidel (Boardwalk Empire), Justin Bond, Carson Kressley, Tyson Ballou, Anouck Lepere, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, Stu Zicherman, Nicole Miller, Nanette Lepore, Fern Mallis, Debbie Bancroft, Daniel Benedict, Genevieve Jones, and Cinema Society founder Andrew Saffir. |
