Last Thursday at 583 Park Avenue, the Hope For Depression Research Foundation hosted its annual "Hope" luncheon seminar. Actor Richard Dreyfuss was the guest of honor and speaker. Dreyfuss talked about confiding his bipolar disorder publicly in an effort to come to realistic terms with it as a "disorder" and not something to hide or feel shame about. The HFDR Foundation was founded by Audrey Gruss to raise the profile of Depression as a common problem. Mrs. Gruss says that it is has become even more prominent in men right now. She believes there are solutions that can be found through research.

There is nothing rare about depression. It is a common condition found in all animals, to varying degrees, and often depending on how they are treated in their personal environment under whatever their personal circumstances. At the luncheon Seminar Dreyfuss talked about how important it was to put it out there. In the light. We are not alone.

The Carter Burden Center for the Aging hosted its 42nd Anniversary Gala Wednesday at the Mandarin Oriental. Founded by the late Carter Burden, the "center without walls" provides integral support to seniors age 60 and over in various locations throughout East Manhattan.

The theme for the gala was “Art Works” – most fitting in a year that saw the opening of both the Carter Burden Gallery in the heart of the Chelsea art district, and expanded art classes at a new Macy’s Creative Arts Center in East Harlem. A major tenet of the center’s mission being to support the efforts of older people to live safely and with dignity, the evening focused on a continuum of programs the Carter Burden Center provides to keep their participants engaged in their community via attending, practicing, and creating new art.

Mr. Phelan also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Aspen Art Museum, the Whitney Museum and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and is on the Investment Committee for the SMU Endowment, the North American Advisory Board of the London School of Economics and the Harvard Business School – Board of Deans Advisors, in addition to serving on the Board of the Federal Enforcement Homeland Security Foundation.

After a brief film featuring both Mr. and Mrs. Phelan, as well as some re-emerging artists that have had recent exhibitions at the Carter Burden Gallery, Susan Burden, Board Member and widow to Carter, and William Dionne, Executive Director of the organization, touched on the necessity of the Carter Burden Center's programming.

On Monday, October 28th supporters of the Park Avenue Tree Lighting gathered at the International Fine Art and Antique Dealers Show (IFAADS) for a lively reception hosted by Anna and Brian Haughton and First Republic Bank. The Park Avenue Tree Lighting, a popular New York tradition dating back to 1945, is made possible each year by the community's contributions to The Fund for Park Avenue. It's a wonderful example of the role that private philanthropy can play in the life of our City.

This year marked the IFAADS's 25th anniversary. The event featured Mario Buatta signing his just-released book "Fifty Years of American Decoration." Potterton Books generously donated a percentage of the proceeds to The Fund. The self-described, "Prince of Chintz" held court and entertained old friends, clients and new fans with his signature quips and jokes. He personalized every book and by the end of the evening all were sold!

Trees were first lit on Park Avenue in 1945 to honor the men and women who lost their lives in World War II. Today the lit trees serve as a memorial to all who have died defending our country. The 2013 Park Avenue trees will be lit on Sunday, December 8th following a ceremony that begins at 6:30 p.m. outside the Brick Presbyterian Church (Park Avenue @ 91st Street).
