The New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NYSPCC), the world's first child protection agency, held its annual fall benefit on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at The Metropolitan Club. This year, The NYSPCC's benefit was their Inaugural Wine Dinner. The 215 guests, dressed in festive attire, enjoyed an extraordinary menu designed by renowned chef, Jonathan Waxman, of Barbuto, and featured excellent wines from the Napa Valley winery, Tournesol. The cocktail hour kicked off the evening with wine tasting tables sponsored by Bespoke, Far Niente, Millbrook Vineyards and Winery, OneHope and Premier Cru Wine Merchants. David Stack, President of the NYSPCC Board of Directors served as the evening's emcee. The dinner included a welcome by Executive Director, Dr. Mary L. Pulido. Chef Waxman delivered remarks on the specially designed menu and wine pairings. During dinner, guests heard from Jamie Ritchie, CEO & President of Americas & Asia for Sotheby's Wine. Mr. Ritchie spoke about the world of wine auctions, and shared his invaluable insight into buying and collecting. He led guests through a lively auction of highly covetable items. |
The event raised over $340,000, which benefits The NYSPCC's Trauma Recovery Program. The Dinner Co-Chairs were Lauren B. On the second floor, The Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and supporters created their own in-store boutique selling top designer fashions, accessories and home products. The home website Remodelista.com held its first "Remodelista Market" on the fourth floor of the house featuring one of a kind items from local New York artisans. A donation based on the proceeds from the evening shopping party and the week-long sale will be given to The Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. The store is now open to all and runs through Saturday, November 23, from 11am-6pm. |
LightYears, Lighthouse International's annual gala, honoring the artistic, philanthropic, and civic contributions of our city's most influential and forward thinking leaders, was held on Tuesday night at The Plaza Hotel. Proceeds from LightYears support vital Lighthouse International programs and services that help people of all ages overcome the challenges of vision loss. Lighthouse International 2013 Honorees inlcuded Fran and Barry Weissler, the seven-time Tony Award Winning Broadway Producers of La Cage Aux Folles, Chicago and Pippin; Amelia Quist-Ogunlesi, OD, Lighthouse Board Member and dedicated advocate of charitable causes; Jesse H. There was a special performance by Bebe Neuwirth of two Kander & Ebb songs featured on her first solo recording, Porcelain: "Ring Them Bells" and "But the World Goes 'Round". Diana Williams served as Master of Ceremonies. |
This past Monday night, Seth & Alexi Meyers, Elie Tahari, Diane von Furstenberg, Glamour Editor-In-Chief Cindi Leive, Ann Curry, Top Chef Master Sang Yoon, NY Jets David Nelson, Alison and Howard Lutnick, Sarah Hughes, Sara Ziff, Chris Del Gatto and Veronica Webb and many others came out to support Worldwide Orphans at their 9th Annual Gala in at Cipriani in NYC. Seth Meyers hosted and the evening honored exceptional Worldwide Orphans ambassadors including long-time supporter Diane von Furstenberg and Dr. Sophie Mengistu, WWO Ethiopia Country Director. There were certainly some light moments throughout the night, though. Before walking the blue carpet, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg helped Dr. Jane Aronson tie her signature DVF wrap dress that Jane had put on incorrectly with the help of her two sons. Amy Poehler shared a video expressing the need for people to donate as it makes them skinny, but also shared that she was so upset that she couldn't attend as Seth has a restraining order against her. |
Finally, Seth Meyers recounted the time he got a flat tire in Dr. Jane Aronson's driveway and how Jane coerced the gas station attendant to replace it. For her help, Jane playfully suggested that Seth host the November 18th gala; he so happily agreed. Founded in 1997 by renowned adoption medicine specialist, Dr. Jane Aronson, the mission of Worldwide Orphans is to transform the lives of orphaned children to help them become healthy, independent, productive members of their communities and the world. Abbott House held its special event, The Dignity of Family Life Award Dinner / 50th Anniversary Gala, at the Marina Del Rey in Throgs Neck, NY. With over 300 people in attendance, the event raised $165,000 for Abbott House's programs and services. Meredith Vieira (television journalist) served as Emcee for the evening. The gala celebration honored Al Roker (NBC News) and Deborah Roberts (ABC News) and their family with the inaugural The Dignity of Family Life Award. |
This award is presented to individuals who personify the values and commitment necessary to preserve the dignity of family life. The Dignity of Family Life Award has been created in remembrance of the occasion of the very first Abbott House fund-raising dinner when the honoree, Nobel Laureate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered a speech he titled "The Dignity of Family Life: an Address at Abbott House, Westchester County, NY October, 29, 1965." In it, Dr. King noted that Abbott House is "serving humanity in a most constructive way." |
Six others were presented with Friend of Abbott House awards for their longstanding contribution of time, talent, and treasure to the people served by Abbott House. These included Susan Corcoran, Barbara Kammerer, Dr. Robert Rawdin, Jody Rawdin, David Wade, and Diane Wade. The event was also the occasion of the launching of a major gift campaign, entitled "Fifty Forward, Celebrating the Past, Securing the Future." Announced by Abbott House Board of Directors Chairman, Gregory T. Mooney, the goal of the campaign is $1,000,000. It will begin November 1 (the actual date of incorporation fifty years ago) and run for one year. |
