Wrapping Up The Fall Gala Circuit

Lenox Hill Neighborhood House's Associates Committee Chairs at its Fall Benefit.

A couple of weeks ago, the Lenox Hill Neighborhood House held its Fall Associates Committee Benefit. There were cocktails and prizes to be won at Asprey on Madison Avenue, followed by dinner and dancing at the Knickerbocker Club.

Leslie Heaney, a supporter of the Neighborhood House with her husband Andrew for over a decade, was honored at the benefit, along with Michelle Smith, founder and designer of the fashion line Milly.

Close to 250 attended – all looking quite glamorous.

Lenox Hill Neighborhood House helps 20,000 people in need each year, ages 3 to 103, on the East Side of Manhattan. Widely recognized as one of New York's premier nonprofit organizations, it was founded 119 years ago and provides an extensive array of effective human services—social, educational, legal, health, housing, mental health, nutritional and fitness.

On Wednesday, November 20, 2013, Silver Hill Hospital held its fourth annual fall gala at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City. This year's Gala honored longtime supporter and Board Director, Peter Busch Orthwein, and his wife, Beverly, and CNBC anchor, Lawrence Kudlow. The 400 guests enjoyed a very special performance by Grammy and Tony-winning musical artist, Cyndi Lauper. Ms. Lauper opened with her song "Fearless" and went on to play her classic ballad "True Colors".

Peter Orthwein, the Co-Founder and Chairman of Thor Industries, has been a Silver Hill Hospital board member since 2005 and chair of the Planning and Finance Committee. His dedication and brilliant leadership has been instrumental in guiding the Silver Hill through a significant financial turnaround, and his conscientious approach to this work is exemplified by its excellent financial condition. Beverly Orthwein serves as an active volunteer visiting the Acute Care Unit regularly to deliver compassionate support and hope to patients. Her loyal support of Silver Hill and numerous non-profit organizations is laudable and indicative of her generous spirit. She served as one of the evening's speakers sharing her personal experience at Silver Hill Hospital.

Lawrence Kudlow, anchor of CNBC's "The Kudlow Report," has a powerful story of recovery, and is a tireless advocate for promoting greater understanding and acceptance for those with addictions or mental illness. He delivered an impassioned speech to the crowd about his journey to recovery. Silver Hill Hospital shares Mr. Kudlow's passion to eliminate stigmas surrounding these illnesses, and to inspire more patients to seek treatment.

A live auction was led by Sotheby's, Hugh Hildesley. The evening raised close to $850,000 for financial assistance for individuals who need Silver Hill's long-term residential treatment programs but are without adequate resources to cover the costs.

In 1931 renowned psychiatrist Dr. John Millett was searching for a setting close to New York to open a small residential mental health clinic. A picturesque farmhouse on a pastoral site in New Canaan, Connecticut proved irresistible for what he envisioned. In just a few short years, Silver Hill achieved national recognition as a top tier psychiatric hospital, revered for expert and compassionate treatment for patients struggling with mental illness or addiction. A steadfast adherence to mission – "to provide the best treatment for mental illness and addiction; and to offer continuing support, counseling and education to patients and families in every phase of illness and recovery" – has shaped the hospital's growth over time. Today, Silver Hill, a not-for-profit hospital, provides comprehensive inpatient, residential and outpatient programs for adolescents and adults covering the full spectrum of psychiatric diagnoses.

Central Park itself took center stage as the Central Park Conservancy celebrated the beauty of the fall season at its annual "Autumn in Central Park." Held under the Naumburg Bandshell, Autumn in Central Park was launched in 2011 with great success, rising over $1.1 million for the care and preservation of the Park. Over five hundred attended this year's celebration of New York City's most treasured green space.

Last month, Princess Katherine of Serbia was in New York for a luncheon held at Le Cirque for her beloved charity, Lifeline. Lifeline works with the many impoverished Serbians still suffering the ravages of that country's war. The Princess' special attention is given to helping blind children.

Organized by Lifeline board members Cheri Kaufman, David Hryck and Susan Gutfreund, Le Cirque's dining room was overflowing with guests supporting this important cause. Prince Alexander of Serbia introduced his wife Princess Katherine who gave a touching account of her work in Serbia. Cheri Kaufman followed and introduced former Governor David Patterson who spoke of his life struggles and later accomplishments due to being blind.

Three weeks ago on a Thursday, the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) celebrated its 16th annual Collaborating for a Cure dinner and auction at the Park Avenue Armory, hosted by Michael and Elin Nierenberg.

They honored Arthur Imperatore, President of NY Waterway with the Humanitarian of the Year Award and Tadashi Shoji with the Fashion Cares Award. Chris Wragge, Co-Anchor of CBS2 News This Morning, was emcee. Hugh Hildesley of Sotheby's conducted the auction.

The evening raised close to $3 million to support the Foundation's research efforts.
